Phyte Club Update May 18

It was a great year in the garden this year! We harvested over 400 pounds of produce for the Worthington Resource Pantry, grew hundreds of plants, presented at the Worthington Farmers Market, The Worthington Science Day, the Worthington Green Team Pollinator Pathway Party, Green on the Green and more. We gave away dozens of native gardens, expanded our worm composting, built a new fence-- and a proper gate!!!-- put in a cistern and drip irrigation system, made healthy snacks, dried herbs, made soap, planted 12 native trees, refreshed the Linworth Labyrinth, and, as of this writing, our sweet potato vines are still alive. Over the summer, we will continue the labyrinth glow-up, prepare the area for our Native Food Forest, harvest using new and improved harvesting techniques, experiment with rain water collection, and probably eat some homemade herb flavored ice cream.

Phyte Club Update May 11

It was a great week in the garden this week! Linworth School Community Garden was at Green on the Green on Saturday morning talking about sustainability and raising some funds. We also finished the squash trellises, laid out soaker hoses for our new water system, finished cleaning up the labyrinth and got some new plants installed in the labyrinth, herb and flower beds. We planted two of the three sisters and added some beans and cucumbers to what is growing in the food garden. This week, we will do some harvesting of cool season crops, plant tomatoes and start other warm season plants, and finish organizing the food garden. Don't worry-- the sweet potatoes are still alive. If it stays warm, we will plant them at the last Phyte Club of the school year-- May 19th..

Phyte Club Update May 4

It was a great week in the garden this week even though our plants were not big enough to sell at the Worthington Farmers Market this week. We will be at Green on the Green this coming Saturday-- May 10th-- from 9-noon selling plants and crafts as well as talking about sustainability. We did finish prepping the 3 Sisters beds. We mulched and cleaned up the Ohio Natives garden, installed the cistern, planted two trees, built a trellis for the sweet potatoes (which are still alive!)  and got started on building the trellis in the new squash bed. Even more exciting-- Fenn put the finishing touches on the new gate, so now it has a proper latch and everything! This coming week, we will plant the 3 Sisters and the bush beans, mulch around the new trees, finish the edging, and weed the thistles on the rim of the labyrinth.

Phyte Club Update April 6

It was a great week in the garden this week! We continued work on the new deer fence, reassembled the strawberry towers, prepped the onion and the sweet potato beds, planted our cool season crops, started our sweet potatoes indoors, and laid out the plan for shrubs in the labyrinth. This coming week, we will try to finish the deer fence, install the shrubs in the labyrinth, mulch some pathways and maybe plant the onions, depending on how wet the bed is. Trash Talkers will also meet briefly to talk about solutioneering with the Worthington Green Team and make an action plan. Also, if you are planning to attend the citizen scientist event, Worthington Bioblitz, on April 19th from 1-3, please rsvp on the homepage the website, linworthschoolcommunitygarden.org

Phyte Club Update March 9

It was a great week in the garden this week! Phyte Club did some heavy lifting! We moved our compost bin to make room for a new water system, and we set up some infrastructure for low tunnels, which are structures that work like mini greenhouses on plant beds. We also added soil to some of the raised beds. The Sustainable Linworth class pulled down some of the fencing for us in preparation of fence repair and rebuild at Interim. Phyte Bites served toasted sunflower seeds that we harvested and dried in the fall Next week, we will have a visitor, Dan Barash, from the Worthington Green Team. He has a grant to help Worthington reduce single use plastics, and the garden is going to be part of the program! This is a great opportunity for us to be involved in a city wide sustainability program, as well as save some money during our native plant sale. We will also continue to prep for the 2025 Interim Glow Up! 7 weeks until last frost!
